I know it is not a news flash to say that adolescents can have trouble communicating with their parents.

It is a developmental time of separation and individuation, and adolescents greatly benefit from a relationship with an adult that is not a parent.

Through the therapeutic relationship, teens can try out some of their thoughts and perceptions without having to commit to them in ways they might feel inclined to with a parent. In my practice I honor the confidentiality of my work with teenaged clients while also maintaining communication with parents about the general themes we address in session. I only share information with a parent after discussing it with my teen client.
